How to do a skills audit

Boosting the employability and job prospects of those in our local community is at the heart of what we do. One of the key things we encourage our clients to do is figure out their skills and strengths. A good way to do this is by completing a skills audit.

A skills audit is the process of identifying and assessing your skills. It can help you to understand your strengths and weaknesses, and to identify areas where you need to actively improve and develop.

It can help with:

  • Identifying career goals and making plans to achieve them
  • Finding jobs and opportunities that match your skills and interests
  • Negotiating for higher salaries and promotions
  • Prepare for job interviews and performance reviews

Now you know what a skills audit is, the next step is figuring out how to do one.

Luckily, it is super straight forward. Follow these steps:

  1. Identify your goals - What do you hope to achieve by conducting a skills audit? Are you trying to find a new job, get promoted, or develop your skills for a particular purpose? Once you know your goals, you can tailor your skills audit to focus on your desired outcome.
  2. List your skills and experience - Make a list of all of your skills and experience. This includes both hard and soft skills.
  3.  Plan of action - Once you have identified your skills and experience, identify areas where you need to improve. This could involve taking courses, attending workshops, or gaining on-the-job experience.
  4. Review your skills audit regularly - Your skills and experience will change over time, so it's important to review your skills audit regularly. This will help you to stay up-to-date on your skills and to identify new areas for development.

Conducting a skills audit is a valuable tool. It is simple, straight forward, and will help you reach your goals!

New Horizons can help you support your community

Building the wellbeing, personal development, and employability of those in the Liverpool city region is at the heart of what we do.

A huge part of this is community outreach. Through our facilitators Jenny and Bea, we deliver our services to all six boroughs of our city region. Whether that is at children centres, community centres, or schools, we create a safe space in any facility to make sure participants feel comfortable to grow, share stories, and learn.

We recently received feedback from Debbie Canon, Services Coordinator for Belle Vale, Hunts Cross and Mossley Hill Children’s Centre. Facilitator Jenny delivered our Women's Power Programme which allows women come together to share stories, build confidence, and confide in each other. Here's what Debbie had to say:

The courses delivered by The Women’s Organisation in the Children Centre are excellent. The contents and the delivery are  professional and supportive of the parents accessing them. As a parent its good to take time to access a friendly and informal course that helps you develop and grow as a person and that’s what the Women's Power Programme does. I feel it’s true partnership working as we provide the creche and The Women’s Organisation deliver the course. The parents love them and the tutor is professional and empathetic to individual needs of the participants. Thank you!

LIVERPOOL LIGHTHOUSE - HARBOUR FUND - CREATIVE PROJECT FOR 18-25 YEAR OLDS

Liverpool Lighthouse has opened applications for the ‘Harbour Fund’; a project which will support 6 young people with their creative projects, and help them build a career in the wide ranging music industries. Funded by Youth Music, the project is open to young people aged 18-25.

Successful applicants will be supported to develop and deliver an independent and innovative project. This can be anything; from artist development to events management, technical roles to teaching. If the project relates to music, the Harbour Fund can help by providing the skills, experience and confidence they need to develop a career or as a side-hustle to sustain a music career.

Applicants need to have an exciting or innovative approach with the potential to create positive change in the industry. They will be supported to develop a budget for their project and will be provided with a grant of up to £1000 to cover project expenses. Successful applicants will also have free access to the following facilities at Liverpool Lighthouse: a workspace; recording studios; venue; meeting rooms; resources and equipment; support, advice, and guidance from experienced industry professionals and training to support their project delivery where needed.

Alongside their core project, they will receive 6 months of paid work experience in one of 4 areas that Liverpool Lighthouse can provide excellent mentoring and facilities:

•             Events management

•             Venue management

•             Studio management

•             Music production

Tom Percy, the studio manager at Liverpool Lighthouse says “This is an incredible opportunity not only for young people, but also Liverpool’s diverse music scene. As music and events try to find their footing in a post-Covid landscape, having the facilities and opportunities for young people to develop and deliver their music project ideas will be invaluable to kickstart careers in Liverpool’s vibrant music industry”.

To be eligible for the project, applicants must be aged 18-25, live in Merseyside, and be from one of:

·        An ethnically diverse background of low representation

·        Not in employment, education, or training

·        From a low socio-economic background
